Trips

Please visit our Calendar page for details of trips and other events and check back from time to time for details about new trips added later in the year.

In the past we have had a wide variety of trips, near and far. We have visited Brookside Gardens in Maryland and the Washington National Cathedral for their Angel Tour and Tea. We have also done spring wildflower walks, led by Claudia Thompson-Deahl, RA’s former Environmental Resource Manager. Several trips have taken us into DC including a trip to see the exhibit “East of Eden: Gardens in Asian Art” at the Smithsonian’s Sackler Gallery, a visit to the orchid exhibit at the Museum of Natural History, and a trip to the US Botanic Garden on the National Mall. We have taken tours of the American Horticultural Society’s River Farm Headquarters gardens, Meadowlark Botanical Gardens and Surreybrooke Garden in Middletown, MD.

Hillwood Museum and Gardens

Other trips have taken us to the Richmond and Philadelphia Garden Shows; Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, VA for their Holiday Tour and Tea; the Ladew Topiary Gardens in Monkton, MD; Winterthur Museum and Gardens in Winterthur, DE; The Glenview Mansion in Rockville, MD; and Hillwood Museum and Gardens in Washington, DC. These trips usually include a lunch stop, occasionally a winery visit, and are a wonderful opportunity to enjoy each others company while visiting gardening sites of interest.

Workshops

December usually brings a holiday decorations workshop of some kind. They are very popular and provide a wonderful time to gather with club friends for a holiday activity. Previous workshops have included holiday wreaths; holiday mugs; centerpieces and natural ornaments; and pressed flower note cards. Please visit the Calendar page to check dates of future workshops. Workshops are for members only.

Civic Beautification

Reston Regional Library Sculpture Garden

In 1992 the club presented to the Reston community a specially commissioned abstract sculpture by David Holland, a Washington area sculptor. The sculpture was placed in a garden setting at the entrance to the library and this small garden has been planted and maintained by members of the garden club since that time.

Wildflower Beautification

The Reston Garden Club has a long history of supporting and funding wildflower beautification in Reston. We have contributed to wildflower plantings along highway medians and roadsides and at the Walker Nature Center. Civic beautification activities for the next club season will be listed on the Calendar page as soon as information is available.
